    All that accepted, it's got to beat the shit out of Mplabx.

    Personally I use Proteus for debugging algorithms and serial terminal for real hardware.

    I'm not a fan of software-based simulators either... they're limited in what they can do and you're at the mercy of the simulator folks as far as properly simulating real-world conditions.

    I only use them to debug a pure software algorithm.

    Gotta agree, your comments about mplabx aren't far off the mark.
    Unfortunately I'm stuck with dealing with it for other reasons, but I have to wash my mouth out with soap every time I fire it up!

    A debugger should give the status of the machine as detailed as possible. Breaking into certain point it might be the best. Unfortunately that is rather difficult with a real hardware, unless to use an ICE.
