USB 60Watt or even 100Watt for 3Amp eq. 5Amp so we CAN have a voltage of 20Volt on the USB port.
I warn you don't even think about it, it will destroy your Smartphone, USB-Drive etc.!

The 100W capability was exactly why I was researching USB-C. I'm using that to deliver enough power to fast charge a system @ 20V/5A Max. Then using the same cable and USB port to power a device @ 5V/2A max and at the same time run a bi directional data connection to a to a laptop.

The power sensing and switching is handled by the usb controller / power supply. The bi-directional capability and negotiation prevents over voltage to any connected device. So plugging your smartphone into a USB-C supply capable of 100W does no harm, the supply negotiates and steps up power to the maximum permited by the smart phone. if the smart phone is 'dumb' it gets just 5V / 2A https://www.anker.com/products/varia...-pd-4/A2041121

There are some interesting products beginning to appear

another article that maybe of interest

    and

    https://www.rohm.com/support/usbpd

    and

So power supplies and cables are available, the challenge for me right now, is the design of a device that can source or sink 100W and manage data transfer all over the same port, depending upon what device is connected.

I have not checked the USB documentation but if that is correct they should consider replacing the word Serial with some a little shorter.
Finding the right USB cable to charge a device with can be annoying now when they all look different, trying to find the right cable when they all look the same will be a right pain in the behind. I can see people giving up with it in frustration the more USB C only devices they get unless they have no choice because everything is USB C only.

The cable should just be a cable, wires connecting one end to the other, only the requirements of the hardware at the end of it should be different and they communicate that to the host so that correct power and data is transmitted. That video makes it sound like you have intelligent cables and a HDMI cable will identify and reject display port data which seems unlikely to me. Although I can see how the data speed capability of a cable could be reduced as power is increased due to the higher EM field emitted by the power connections interfering with the data signal.

The video makes it sound like you can get 100W out of each USB port. Most USB host controller IC's can support 4 USB ports, at 100W each that would be 400W total. Unless the power source is external to the host controller that would require a large device with a heatsink and fan cooling, or probably two as most PC's have more than 4 USB ports. Consequently I would be checking the USB documentation to see if that really is a guaranteed 100W per port rather than 100W total between the 4 ports before designing anything that consumes that much power.

I don't think that many Mobile or portable devices will supply 100W, its mainly Power packs and power supplies that will provide the 100W capability. So in a wall plug power supply, 100W out of more than one port is feasible, though probably unlikely.

Thanks Lester for the thewirecutter link. I was looking for a USB-C to USB-A adapter cable and now I know which one to go for without paying Apple prices.

Without the current limiting on USB, just wait for the thousands, if not millions, of computers to go bang when a peripheral gets damaged!

It's a very stupid mechanism for an interface, and the noise on USB is dreadful, but the very silly CE rules allow it.
