If your looking for tried and tested, a 16F690 is a good choice, widely available and dirt cheap if rather dated. Having suggested that, a great many people (including Les) would go for 18F rather than 16F.

If you buy them from Microchip Direct they are dirt cheap but freight is a killer if you only buy a small number.
There is also a chip select facility on the site to help you make your choice.

Just out of curiosity I did a quick check on ebay and both Atmel and Microchip devices were available for £0.99 delivered.

Compared to the 89S52, the 16F886 has more flash, more ram, and eeprom.

The 89S52 device is about 20 years old and is one of the earlier Atmel 8052 devices. Good devices in their day, but the more modern devices are much better. I think the reason they are less expensive is that people are trying to get rid of them. LOL

Take a look on the microchip site and check out some of the modern enhanced 14-bit core devices. Some are quite nice, but not as nice as an 18F type, and certainly not as nice as a PIC24 device. LOL BUt the PIC24 devices can be quite pricey for a really good one.

    Take a look here:
    https://www.microchip.com/ParamChart...branchID=30048

It takes quite a lot of getting to the above link with all the crap buzz words and overwhelming advertising on microchip now, so I've found it for you. :-)

Microchip have really screwed up their web site. It is slow to use and complicated to find a simple piece of data. It appears that the university nerds and marketing arseholes of Microchip have also taken over the administration of the company, and screwed that up as well as the latest devices. LOL

The PIC16F15344 is the least expensive one, but it only has 512 bytes of RAM and 7K words of flash, so it's not fantastic but it operates at 32MHz (8MIPS), so a lot can be done with that much of both, especially with Proton because it produces very tight compact Asm code, so a lot can be done in a small space.
