    Are the onboard oscillators accurate and stable enough for serial communication.?
    It varies with different devices, and the temperature range you're working over. You really have to look at the individual datasheet specs.

    For example, the 46K22 is spec'd +/-2% over the range 0 to 70degC, and +/-5% over -40 to +125degC
    2-3% is usually no problem... 5% is really pushing it right to the outer limit, assuming the other end is nuts on.

    As far as serial comms go obviously it's only and issue for async. I found this PDF which deals with error rates and such.

    I use 115200 regularly crystalless on K42 and K22 without and issue and with near zero error counts, albeit over short distances (but of course I could just be lucky).

    I have been using 18f2xk22 for six years with internal osc and serial com at 11520 is no problem. On startup I wait for both osc and PLL to become stable.

    Code:
        Declare Xtal 64
        Symbol PLLEN = OSCTUNE.6         ' PLL enable
        Symbol HFIOFS = OSCCON.2 ' HFINTOSC frequency stable
        Symbol PLLRDY = OSCCON2.7 ' PLL run status

        OSCCON = 110000                       ' Osc =  16 MHz
        While HFIOFS = 0:Wend ' Wait until osc is stable

        PLLEN=1                                     ' Enable PLL 4x 16MHz = 64Mhz
        While PLLRDY = 0:Wend ' Wait until PLL is stable

    Thanks guys. I guess I can get with the times and scrap the xtal.

    Still having issues with the A/D convertor on the 18F47K40. It just reads some Garbage numbers. Just going through the settings again probably I forgot something simple.

    When I start play with k42 I was tripped up by ADC Go/Done on bit 0 instead of bit 1. Probably not your problem but worth checking.

    For what it's worth, on the 18F14K50 it seems (some ?) of the A/D's are enabled by default

    Bcf ANSEL.7 ' disable A/D cha 7 to make portC3 a digital input

    Not what you expect and very frustrating if a pin refuse to work.
