    Default RSOUT Max Speed

    Hi,
    I am having difficulty in getting 18F2420 to output at 38400 baud using RSOUT. Its fine up to 19200 but at 38400 I get rubbish. The 18F2420 is running at 20MHz from external xtal. I have tried various ports but still no joy.

    I have run 12F683 devices at 38400 before using RSOUT with no problem on internal osc ....

    Device = 18F2420
    Declare Xtal = 20
    Declare RsOut_Pin PORTB.0
    Declare Serial_Baud 38400
    Declare RsOut_Mode True

    ADCON1 =$07 'set all IO to digital
    CMCON =$07

    DelayMS 500
    RsOut "RS PORT TEST",13
    Stop

    Any ideas why it won't work ....

    Hi Chris

    The manual says: "Virtually any baud rate may be transmitted and received (within reason), but there are standard
    bauds, namely: - 300, 600, 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, and 19200."

    It seems odd that 38400 is not mentioned but perhaps that's why?

    Charlie

    I have run speeds of 115,200 and higher without issue on several devices, but have not tried the 18F2420. I would suggest looking at the output on an oscilloscope to look for problems.

    @Alan R To be clear, are you saying you've ran RSOout (bit bang) at 115,200?

    Now that I'm thinking about it, I've used HRSOUT to 230k but I can't remember how fast I've used RSOUT. Probably to 57,600. I know I've written my own bit-bang serial out to that speed.

    I would definitely use an Oscope to look closely at the behaviour to tune it for faster speed.

    Of course it's possible to write async serial at mad speeds, the problem is reading.

    I seem to remember a Microchip datasheet about bit bang reading using a timer and an edge detect interupt.
