    That was once a problem with all the earlier devices when setting or clearing the GIE bit of INTCON.

    I'm not saying it is still a problem, but with Microchip, you never know now. What was recommended then was a loop to test the bit before moving on within the program:

    Clear INTCONbits_INT0IE
    While INTCONbits_INT0IE = 1: Wend

    Try the above because INTCON is both readable and writable, so it should work.

    Sorry. That should have been:

    Clear INTCONbits_INT0IE
    While INTCONbits_INT0IE = 1 : Clear INTCONbits_INT0IE : Wend
