A bit off topic but perhaps Les could be tempted to write PIC32 if the compiler would permit only one operation per line?
PIC32 could be written both faster and smaller as well as less work involved for Les.

A parsing stack is standard with all compilers and interpreters for both expressions and conditions. Microprocessors use their actual stack, but this is not available within 8-bit PIC microcontrollers, so the compiler creates its own stack variables for more complex expressions.

The stack variables were also used in some of the compiler's library routines in order to save RAM, which is very limited on some devices so cannot be wasted.

I have looked at PIC32 devices, but, personally, I don't think they will catch on because microchip got the MIPs hardware wrong! And they are actually less powerful than dsPIC or PIC24 devices in a lot of ways, but modern society works on buzz words, so 32-bit is the buzz word of today!!!!!! Even when it is not required in any way, shape, or form in a project! All it adds is extra current required in most cases.
