Default ASM ERROR : Linker Error

I have just started using a 24F32KA304 but can't get anything to compile, code with 24FJ64GA004 compiles fine.

I get a series of ASM errors which I don't understand:

ASM ERROR : Linker Error "a.o: Link Error: Could not allocate section .text, size = 74 PC units, attributes = code"
ASM ERROR : Linker Error: "data_init: Link Error: Could not allocate section .dinit, size = 2PC units, attributes = code"
    .
    .

    Any ideas?

Make sure you are using the latest compiler version, which is version 1.0.2.9.

I've just compiled a small program for the 24F32KA304 without problems.

Can you attach your program and I'll check it out?

Thank you for checking, I have the latest compiler version installed 3.5.7.1 and installed to latest patches last night just to make sure that wasn't the issue before I posted.

I was porting some existing code to this chip when I first got the error but have since stripped it down to a simple flasing led program and still get the same error.

    Code:
;**** Added by Fuse Configurator ****
; Use the Fuse Configurator plug-in to change these settings

It's down to the "BSS_HI1K" fuse setting within "Config FBS".

For some reason, the linker does not like it.

Remove the fuse setting and things compile correctly.

Simon, you said that you are using 3.5.7.1 that is not the latest version of the 8 bit compiler. Was it a typo?
I can't remember which version had the latest P24 compiler included but it was after 3.5.7.1

    Well spotted John!

A sort of typo, I do have 3.5.7.3 installed which I believe is the latest, I wrote down 3.5.7.1 on a piece of paper before I updated and got them mixed up.

When I took out the fuse setting Les mentioned it compiled fine and I'm very happy playing with my new 24F32KA304.

I had installed the 1.02.9 patch for P24, although the IDE does not seem to report the Proton24 version in the help>about.

I have now found the latest version in the files section, I had always gone to Updates to get the latest version. It is a bit confusing that Updates is not actually a link to the latest version.

Default Re: ASM ERROR : Linker Error

    Hello Guys'n'Gals,

I'm tearing my hair out over a Linker error:

Name:	nonLinking.JPG
Views:	12
Size:	22.9 KB
ID:	3454

Is there any way to drill down into precisely where the error comes from? (in saying that, it may not mean much to me!)

Given the above linker posts I checked off the config register parameters with the PPI file , but this code has been compiling ok for months and I've not changed Compiler version since September.

I'm using P24 compiler version 1.0.4.7 and the device is 24FJ64GA306. Flash and RAM use are both around 65%.

I've been working at this code on and off for months and have hit up against this issue now for the second time in the past couple of weeks and have wasted quite a few hours trying to understand what it comes from, but with no real understanding yet. I have more functionality to add and I simply cannot afford this uncertainty to continue.

I've attached two zipped folders, one that links and one that doesn't.
(Cutting the code down to demonstrate the problem doesn't help as the problem disappears, and I have to ADD more code, not remove it.)

While the non-linking version has a few added lines in several places simply related to a bit flag and a counter, I don't believe they are the actual problem.
(Even small additions in the main function can lead to the same linker problem.) I believe it must be something much more fundamental.

It would be very greatly appreciated if any of you much more experienced folk have a little time to try compiling the two folders to see what happens for you.

I need to know how to address the problem and prevent it cropping up again

(Forgive me - my coding skills are not up to that of many of you. If there's anything in there that anyone wants to use - as if! - you are welcome. Some of Les' code has been of use to me, so it's only fair.)

    Many thanks.
    Ian

That error means your program is too big to fit into that device.
Change to a 24FJ128GA306 and it compiles (once you get rid of the "DEC0" format specifiers)

    Thanks Tumbleweed, that's the solution.
After my wasted hours on Thursday, the very same thought only struck me earlier this evening and I tried compiling with the FJ128 version which compiled fine.
There when I checked the forum just now that's exactly what you said. You're a man of experience clearly.

I was relying on the % bars the the IDE updates after a compile and it was only reporting 64% flash use for the FJ64
    That's a lesson for me.

Down side is now that I'll have to change the processor on the 20no boards I've built and are already in service!

you have me intrigued about the "DEC0" comment.... not sure where that is.

    Thanks again for the pointer.

    regards,
    Ian
