    Default PIC24 bootloader

    Hi All,
OK i started on my PIC24 learning curve early this morning, so far so good but i cannot find any mention of bootloading these devices. I would like to use UMC or something similar that can be configured for whatever chip you are using. What if any are you guy's + Gal's using?

    TIA
    Ray

I am recommending you to try "ds30 loader".

    Hi Vangelis,
I have downloaded ds30, and got it working over the network BUT the first bootload works OK and runs the user code then if i try to upload new user code it don't work the second time (cant find bootloader) so i upload the bootloader firmware back onto the PIC and it works again but just once. Is there some define that i need to add to my PDS code to say DS30 bootloader is being used?

    Thanks
    Ray

    Hello Ray et al,

just thinking of how to solve the need for a PIC24 bootloader myself and most interested to hear your experiences and what has proven successful for you. I'm presuming your issue above was caused by the bootloader managing to overwrite it's own code.

I'm in the early days of using a PIC24FJ64GA306 and have a lot to learn about it. I'll be ok programming via the Microchip IPE for a few days but I need to plan for moving to a bootloader very soon.

Did you find DS30 or UMC straightforward enough to configure? I'm a pretty simple minded guy, so complex doesn't work with me! Previous experiences of customising various bootloaders have been a mixed bag.

    Thanks.

    Regards,
    Ian

    Hi Ian,
It's going back a while. From memory I had the most success with the DS bootloader BUT read the documentation first on what the free version supports before choosing the PIC (i made that mistake). I was using a 24EP type and never did find a free bootloader for it so we had to resort to using the PICKIT for firmware changes.

DS30 is pretty straight forward, you start off using a generic template, then make changes to fuse settings, oscillator settings etc, compile in MPLAB and out pops your bootloader firmware. Download DS30 and have a read of the well written documentation, it's pretty straight forward from memory.

    Regards
    Ray

Is the free version of DS30 still available somewhere? I haven't been able to find it in a while.

AFAIK the UMC bootloader doesn't support PIC24.

Nice link John. Iv used tiny bootloader extensively in the past and was not aware of tiny bootloader+. Ill give this a shot on the 24EP part when i get time and see if it works.

Please let us know how you get on with TinyBootloader +. I am sure there are a number of us who would find it useful.
