    Default PICD suggestion

    Hi Dave,
I was sitting here on the Isle of Man having a well deserved beer (not really, the well deserved bit I mean, not the beer) and was wondering how to get out of bit of a problem, I use HRSout and Hyperterminal for debugging. PICD is really brilliant at looking at a lot of the code and stepping through etc but what I wondered if there was a need/possibility for a serial communicator like window where I could be running it in normal speed rather than animating and in the code have something like

    "Serial debug start"
    Print "Mode " DEC VarXXX
    "Serial debug end"

where PICD can run as normal and when it comes across this it sends the data, text etc to the communicator window, possibly also something like an internal breakpoint option so the breakpoints have not got to be set in PICD itself while it is running.

    Regards,
    Bob.

    Hi Bob

Interesting idea, not straight forward, I will have I think about it after I have finished my to do list.

Running at normal speed P-ICD collects no data.
If you just want to debug a small piece of code, just do.

    Enable Debug
    code to debug
    Disable Debug

I will save the breakpoints to a file, so it will set them when to reopen the file.
    Regards
    Dave

    Hi Dave,
The problem as I see it is that the EUSART has to be tied up all the time for PICD to have control so I do not think it is possible to do as you suggest.
I know I could do that with software serial comms but that would mean modifying the hardware and some of the serial communication might be part of the actual final code.
Thanks for looking, there is no rush if you do manage to get round to it.

    Regards,
    Bob

Not that it would be of any use now but I started work on a 2 pin coms system for P-ICD were the data was tx'ed via spi to and from the pic via a USB device.

The idea was that a USB pic would take data sent from the PC and then under the control of the debug pic would have the data clocked back and forth.

I put a lot of work into it but in the end all I got was to find a new silicon bug in the pic I was using. One of those errata's in Mchips library has my name on it.

SPI to and from the PIC sounds like a great idea as the pin selection would be flexible at least for software SPI and would free up the USART for other uses.

    Hi Norm

Yes I think its worth revisiting. Now with more USB chips out there like the Pic18F13k50, it should get around with the issues I was having with the old chip.

What I think I will do is post the coms protocol I came up with, then if it looks right to people eyes implement it.
