I would agree Joseph, surely that is the perfect tool to use, the Amicus compiler is totally free and not a trial version.
The Amicus18 boards are extremely cost effective, also individual projects can be built and used as needed.
It would appear to be ideal.

I think you miss the point fellas.
I can see why teachers may well want PDS. AMICUS may be ideal for a programming class only (although there may be better tools for that in an education environment), but any learning program worth its salt will be looking at much more than that e.g. designing simple circuits - probably using DIP initially and wired components, making a basic board perhaps with a Dalo (or using a protoboard), flashing a LED on their own board, learning about layout, etching, using individual components and so on. Perhaps tying it in with a CAD program etc.
I don't know if AMICUS has ISIS included. If not, another reason for PDS.
There may already be an education offer around, if not it would be a good strategy for the Crownhill team to consider.
    Cheers

    Hi John
In the area of development of their own boards,
there is NOTHING to stop the user downloading Amicus, and never buying an Amicus 18 board.
They can build their own board, etch it do whatever, and program via ICSP.
They CAN design their won circuits, using DIP, and wired components, use protoboard - and use CAD etc..
You do not need the amicus18 board to use the amicus compiler - you just need to use the 2 supported devices, which should cover ANY educational need.

I could DL Amicus18 compiler today, use a pikit 2 and protboard, and build a working design without spending a penny on the amicus18 board.
Is that not the perfect FREE tool ?

I think you may be thinking that the Amicus compiler ONLY works with the Amicus board - it is far more flexible than that.
For educational use - sticking to one superbly flexible PICtm - such as supported by Amicus - is perfect.
What could they NOT do with it ? - they can have USB via an ftdi unit if they want.. Providing they use the support device (PICtm) - not the BOARD - they are free to do as they please.

Amicus18 is the perfect product for schools and education and is our recommended solution.

For educational establishments that want many installations of PDS we can offer a special license. please contact me direct for more details of that arrangement.
