    Default pickit2 and bootloader

    Dear all,
I need a push start with that one. I have a new Pickit2 programmer I use to program the chip(16F.....) with Epic when I was using PBP. My question is when you use Pickit2 as programmer do you still have to pre-load a bootloader for that chip before loading the program?
    Regards,
    Yves

Hi, its great to see you visiting our forum. Why not try Proton Compiler for FREE?

Download the FREE version of Proton Compiler, Its called Amicus18 and its available from HERE

    Hi Sir
A bootloader is a program to load over serial or usb WITHOUT a dedicated hardware programmer.
If you use a pickit2, for example, you can program via ICSP directlyfrom the pickit2, then, you are programming over ICSP, without a bootloader.
It is either a bootloader, or, ICSP.
If you install abootloader, then you would first use the pickit2, after that, then you would use serial OR usb, but not the pickit2.
    I hope that makes sense.

    Thanks Joe,
If I understood I don't need a bootloader in the chip if I program over ICSP using Pickit2. That means I will have to connect to different ports than what I was using for serial programming. So I will have to change the PCB configuration as well, What way you suggest is the best way to go?
    Regards,
    Yves

Hi Yves, you would need both ICSP and serial if you needed a choice.
See the pickit2 help files for icsp programming details, you could have both

If you have already made your pcb's, it is possible to make an adapter using pogo pins or similar to program in-circuit via ICSP. The PGC & PGD don't like any kind of load or capacitance on them though. Look in the PicKit2 datasheet. .Otherwise, its really easy

    Thanks John,
The circuit is still in prototype phase and have to be modified for other reasons too, so not too much problem there.
