John: I reckon you might have to include an error message Label "Device has no USER_ID or unsupported in this software" if the search fails. I can't find any other indicator in the PPI.
I've already added that, not quite your words but the end result is the same. I am just putting up the warning and proceeding on to compiling the untouched source.

Sorry I have not been able to show you anything yet, am having a problem with the API in that it seems to be returning rubbish on my first plgGetPage request so the app gets confused and errors. Its very time consuming when debugging API issues when you cannot use the Delphi debugger to trap things.

Isn't that what you want my app to do, why are you talking about modifying the hex file manually?
I was just considering an alternate alternate approach. It has the merit of removing the complexity of several different methods of writing to User ID.

Also just one test - is there an Extended Linear Address for the same address as IDLOC0 (oh, and get the number of IDLOC's from the following field)

Obviously a plugin is more convenient than a stand alone.

Too late to edit above but it also occurred to me that the alternate method would allow UserID to be written to by devices that cannot do so themselves ie standard 16F's

Wouldn't an eedata solution be simpler George? Or have I misunderstood your suggestion? Easily done when I first face the world in the morning.

The trouble with using any predefined location in either ROM or EEPROM is that it may be unavailable on any given device or overwritten by 3rd. party software. User ID is available across the range of devices I use.

True, I suspect the final software will be fine most of the time - but the world is full of compromises. My wonderful wife 'suggests' and I compromise.

For the standard 16F I think that the only way to do the ID location is from the programmer. Have a look here please.

I do not know exactly what the programmer add to the hex file but it works!

Found another issue after further playing...

Some of the 18 Series have 16 IDLOC's in the PPI file but if I try and define all 16 I get "Argument out of range (not a valid ID location)" so it seems I have to restrict the number of IDLOC's to 8 max.
