Default OK, Fanie's pick and place page...

As per Fanie's RFC on this page:

-The very first image fails to load for me. It is a WMF file, rather odd for a tiny image... maybe this is the problem? Or is the link just broken? Bear in mind that anything other than Windows may not display a WINDOWS METAFILE correctly, and even at that quite possibly only in IE (I use Firefox when possible, IE7 if I have to).

-Let me tit-for-tat you on the subject of page background; I believe that most graphical backgrounds look cheap and amateurish. I would say that if you were Intel and your page was a sea of Intel Inside logos, or a MySpace kiddie with thousands of tiny Justin Timberlakes. I cannot think of a single example where a graphical background image is used in a highly polished professional site, but take that for what it is; maybe you do not WANT a "highly polished" look because you think it is too sterile and not friendly enough. That is fair enough too.

-I am not sure, but I think I counted at least TEN different colors, used for fonts and table borders (not including the extra shades created by the BORDER command, of which there is at least 4). Black for text, blue/green for emphasis, red for extreme attention and no table border colors... but that's just me, and you may like the less formal nature of a varied color scheme. That is fine for personal pref, but I maintain it is not professional.

-You have some text underlined but it is not a link. This was especially confusing to me because your fourth line of text has a line about "WHY SMD" that suggest you should read something on a web page but provides no link to it. I would consider making the WHY a page of its own, but if not at least add an anchor tag and link so you can be taken directly to that part of the page. I am not wild about anchor tags as they confuse navigation using the Back command, but they are better than an un-indexed page.

-This is too subtle for most people to realize they care about, but your pictures would benefit from some basic manipulation. Let's take the first (loadable) image, the guy stuffing a board. There is nothing in the image that is pure white, despite the fact that I see at least 3 different white objects that could be used to set the white point. Similarly and yet surprisingly contradictorily you also have no "true black", only dark mud. Increasing the contrast would be a simple way of improving it, but the only right way is to use something like PShop to set the white and black points. Then you might consider adding a bit more saturation to the image, but that is just gravy once the whites and blacks are good.

-As per my previous critique I am not fond of center-justification. In hobby pages it can make it a bit hard to read and follow, but in business pages it just looks chaotic and messy, like you have no control over the apperance of your page and had to take whatever your template software gave you. Not cool. Almost all the text inside tables looks good because it is all left-just (as most English speakers expect).

-Italics don't work well with normal font sized, due to the horrible pixellation the browser does to slope it. This is one of many reasons why so many web businesses create a lot of their "text" in Photoshop; absolute control over the way it looks, to ANYBODY, on ANY BROWSER, on ANY PLATFORM. There are some reasons to avoid graphical text, such as the fact that search engines cannot index it properly (unless you make heavy use of the ALT tag, and I am the last person on the planet that uses ALT tags).

-STUPID picky note: in the table with the image "Do not peel open more components than you need to place." there is a link to the hot plate page, and this link is mostly in brick red... except for ONE TINY PERIOD at the end of the sentence. Yet another reason not to mess with color... too easy to mess up.

That is the highlights. I have to run or I'd try to find more errata, sorry. Hope I wasn't too savage, and remember I am not intending to come off like a prick... I was just born this way.

    Hi Don

    Yeah, revenge is sweet
No revenge meant, just my honest opinion.

Hmm. I only have one product even remotely ready to ship
Never create that impression. You've got a 'products' link already set up, take that to another page to introduce your product and under that you plant an 'UNDER CONSTRUCTION' thing with the words 'check back later, more products following soon, webmaster type slowly, filling orders' or something. Then actually add some, get some deals from other friends/businesses. Imagine you walk into the new shop (website) and they only have sugar for sale at the moment... 'I only have one product '

There are a lot of usefull and informative stuff you can put on the site for referral, pic stuff, drill speed tables, think ! If you (for free) put another businesses who doesn't have a website's products on your website, they'll promote you website for you, providing it looks ok, in return, also for free ! If it's a business with many customers you can get many feet (so to speak) in your website. If you plan to do this make sure you have a website that can handle the trafic ! Plan to do some work for the other guy... you get your money's worth. If the guy's keen, you could even ask a small percentage of sales resulting from your site... don't be greedy, you are creating trafic for your own products. I use Globat.com and I have 10 terrabyte of webspace to put some nice stuff on... The local service provider here offered me 10Mb which is pretty useless at many times the rate.

The worst thing to say to a customer-to-be is 'we don't do that' you may lose a customer especially if you haven't asked how many he's after and what it's for ! If he wants enough of whatever, you're going to put it together for him in a jiffy. A good approach usually is we're currently out of stock, how urgent are you for these ? or Yes, I can do that for you. 'Give me your number, I'm in a meeting' gives you time to think about a request. Many ways...

The main function of a business is not to make money !! (surprise surprise) but to GET and KEEP customers !

so no one will be coming to my site
You have to register with search engines. It's the only way to get some trafic. Some websites offer a free submission to like 20 or 50 other search engines.
Dont spam ! You also have to be a bit transparent, in where you are, what you do, what you have to offer, etc, phantoms are mostly crooks. Also get your web link on your business card and other documentation, and lastly refer people to your website.

    "Price so low you'll plotz!"
Great expression ! Even better, "We pay you to take them.." Then I'll take two ! First I have to find out what they're actually used for !! One idea comes to mind is you can interface them to security systems ie as by force/ shock break-in sensors (you can see I'm from SA eh !)

surprisingly this is not as large a market as you might think
Who knows - I seen some really funny requests here! I thought I'm kinda into electronics here, right ? Aparently not really... even had a request to make dildo's for a local co. ! "Cum to FAZE... we can bla bla bla...(I'd better shut up)" Had some great ideas about them for a while at least though, like how do you test or demo these things ?

We are again critiquing my product and not as much the site
The site is about the product and the ones to come, right ? The PCB pic's fine for now, I know you'll replace it with another when you're ready.

Also, the pages are clean and uncluttered. Man I hate flashing things and pop-up windows on a website !

    Whadyathink ?

Hi Fanie, I saw your web page re the SMD. You're technique is very similar to the semi automated system that we have. See here

The purchase of the Tresky seemed like the way to go, but in reality we use a system very similar to your description, the machine hardly gets used for anything other than the Binocular scope and the cold light system. !

    Hi Lester,

I'm sure the Tresky is a nice machine... I was hoping to get an opinion on the web page itself, is it set up good / bad, impression, improve this or whatever.

When you are right, you are right. This sent me into a tiny panic, but I threw two more products up today and it feels a little more like a company that engages in multiple product development... as opposed to a guy with a widget. So, the product page now shows two more products, and those two products have fairly decent product pages. I will add as much as I can prior to my departure Saturday.

Well, I don't know of too many "serious" commericial sites that do that. I can' think of anything at Apple, Dell, Sony or anyone else where they provide any kind of information service for free, so while drill speed tables might not fit I do like the idea of helping promote other people who do not have the infrastructure I have, either for development, manufacturing or web presence/sales. Now that I have gone through the pain of filing for a business license (city, county and state!), got a commercial bank account, set up the company as an LLC (cheaper than producy liability insurance) and installed the painfully complicated shopping cart system I can see why so few people with good ideas ever make it to market. Good thing I have mad skills and a lot of free time.

Seriously? The rather large company I used to work for hasn't deliberately done anything with search engine promotion in many years... but maybe that is because they are so big and the products so widely received that there are hundreds if not thousands of references and links on other people's pages. Perhaps in my case, where I am barely networking at all (actually, only from my atomicfireballs.com site) I should look into this. I just have a hard time conceiving of PAYING to get on a search engine that claims to be trolling my content anyway. I mean, my logs show all the major search engines crawl atomicfireballs.com all the time, but I have NEVER promoted that site.

Yeah, you could have used one of these with the red LED swapped out for a piezo alarm before you got your generator stolen!

I have a friend that has been on me to make a talking dildo for a long time! He thinks that women would like a smooth Antonio Banderas spaniard cooing at just the right time... fast in and out would trigger "Oh jes! Oh jes! Faster!" while a slow stroke might trigger "Ooooooh, joo are inkredible!"... etc. I am not saying it is a totally stupid idea, but it is a little outside what I was going for! What the hell, I have a few porn-oriented domains I am poaching, maybe I will start a new company.

Are you insinuating that the CR2032 is not sufficient to drive the blue LED once the battery has discharged a significant amount of its power?

    Frak... caught!

I have never measured the amount of discharge needed before the blue LED just won't open up, but clearly it is there. Once we realized we were going to have to redesign the Forceworks to make it "consumer worthy" we stopped doing additional testing, but once the v2 model is complete we will have these runtime answers. Actually, I think we will use high-efficiency red and green since it costs slightly less and gives better optical and electrical performance.

Now, do you have a web site you want reviewed or not? THEN GET OUT!!

    Hi Don

I can' think of anything at Apple, Dell, Sony or anyone else
I won't mess with these guys... I was thinking more or less in the lines of other private businesses. There are thousants of businesses looking for ways to up their exposure and would jump for this.

Also realize that most of the businesses out there does not manufacture anything - they just act as a middleman - moving stuff from manufacturer to end user.

So, the product page now shows two more products
That's how it starts ! Pretty soon you won't have time to update the website. When the focus shifts we can always find something else to complain about.

I don't know of too many "serious" commericial sites that do that
The idea is not to get to serious too quickly, not yet with 3 products anyways. The idea is to put stuff up that may get someone to bookmark the page or refer back to it for some reason.

business license (city, county and state!), commercial bank account, company as an LLC and painfully complicated shopping cart system
Wow ! You can now add a page 'how to set up a business in .au '

search engine that claims to be
Of course they'll take your money. Google your stuff, if a search result referring to your site doesn't come up then you need to submit, otherwise you've got it made !

Look here... http://www.submitexpress.com/list.html ... just an example of one, and you can't beat 'free'.

"Meta tags play a definitive role in determining the searchability of a site"

    From http://www.ananzi.co.za/Add_site/indexing.html

Don't expect to be in the top 10 of every search... there are millions of sites out there fighting for the top position in a search, but you will be found.

    prior to my departure Saturday
Now what ? You've a web site to resurrect ! Unless you're going fishing of course...

Had another look at your www.temporalforce.com (you're getting trafic !)

Like what you did with the products page so far, you could maybe make the link to each product's info a bit more obvious (underline ?).

Make the e-mail link more available (maybe on each page) for enquiries and some contact details, some people won't e-mail but would want to talk to you 1 on 1 like in confidence.

I may not have mentioned the SOLE reason this site needs to be HIGHLY functional in the next 18-20 hours (from the time I type this); I am attending the 2007 CES for the sole purpose of "attacking" a vendor in their booth. Here is the short verison of the story.

In 2005 I went to CES, saw these guys, and saw they had an awesome product I knew my former employer would want to work with in a particular product. I told the project manager at my former employer about them and he tried to contact them, but they never replied to any of his calls or E-Mails. I took the project back over and I tried to contact them, no reply. When I was fired from my former employer I decided to do the project myself and I tried to contact them with multiple E-mails and phone calls, and they never ever replied. So, I am flying to Las Vegas and braving the one of the biggest conventions JUST so I can corner one of those bastards in their booth (yes I have the booth number) and "demanding" to know if they will or will not work with me, no silence or avoidance. Yes or no, MF's.

OK, so I drop my spiel on them and my supa-fly business card, and I leave. Anywhere from six seconds to a few days from then someone will be on a computer, taking a look at this "Tempura Farts or whatever" web site and deciding if I am worthy.

    So, am I worthy?
