    Unhappy USB Key Driver Problems

    Hi

I am having the same problem listed in this thread.

    http://www.picbasic.org/forum/showth...hlight=usb+key

I have the driver inf file in C:\WINNT\INF like it is supposed to be but it will not install. I am running Win2k Pro. I have tried everything in the above post except re-install windows. This is not an option for me. This machine is used for all my development and would take way to long to get it back to where it is. I have tried the software and key on another employees computer running Win2k Pro and it works properly! This problem needs to be resolved as I am not the only one experiencing this.

I just purchased The Proton Development Suite after evaluating both PDS and Power Basic Pro. I did not like the fact it had a USB key (Not for pirating concerns but the cost if it is lost or stolen. And the downtime if the key breaks) I went with PDS becuase I feel it is a better compiler. I am starting to think I may have made a mistake.

    Any help will greatly appreciated.

    Thank You
    Rob

    Hi
I have an update on the problem. This computer is setup to dual boot either Win98 or Win2k Pro (Because I have an older PC Board cad system that has a LPT port dongle that will only work on Win98). Another instance of a hardware key that causes issues. I booted into Win98 and installed PDS and the USB key and it works properly? So the problem does not appear to be a hardware issue. I would much rather work in Win2k so I would still like a fix for this problem. But at least I can work from this machine.

    Thanks Again

    Hello Rob,

there is no simple answer to your question.

The thread that you refer contains all of the available information regarding location of drivers. As you will see from that thread, the users that expierienecd problems resolved them locally.

The USB key drivers and USB key operation have been tested under Win2K and there are many users running WIN2K with the USB key, Both PDS users and users of other products, therefor we are confident that there is not an issue with the USB Key and PDS.

The only way to resolve the problem with your installation is to identify the application or third party drivers that are preventing the INF file being correctly interpreted or the sys file from being loaded.

Clearly this is related specifically to your machine and installation, as you say "I have tried the software and key on another employees computer running Win2k Pro and it works properly! " and we have users that also have no difficulty useing the usb key under Win2K

As with any problem of this nature, you will need to take a methodical approach, document or note what has been eliminated as you go.

Based on user feedback, You might want to elimiate the follwing as they have caused probelms during isntallation for one or two users.

Assuming that you have followed all the points in the previous post that you refer to.
Ensure that you can see the inf file and driver in suitable directories
AntiVirus asoftware - remove during installation of PDS
Firewall and anti Spyware applications - - remove during installation of PDS

Enter safe mode or admin mode and disable the loading of drivers and applications one by one to identify the app or driver that prevents the USB key driver from being loaded.

You have several systems that the application does correctly load and run on, so you can use these as a reference as to what does not need to be eliminated.

Admittedly this is a long slow and laborious process, but since the probelm is related to your installation alone, it is something that we cannot reproduce and assist with at our end.

I hope the above helps, we will try to assist with suggestions where possible if you want to post your progress.

USB Key not found - I had been using Proton Plus Compiler successfully but after being forced by viruses to reformat and reinstall XP on my laptop the USB key not found error. The laptop sees and installs the spark key and the driver looks ok in the Device Manager. I have loaded Proton Plus onto 2 other machines running Windows 98 and still get the same message. I plug the key in after installing and again it is recogniosed by the computer and the led comes on but Proton plus does not see it. Can anyone help?

    Exclamation PDS install Problems (USB-Key)

I have finally received my copy of PDS and spent about 4 hrs so far trying to install it.

The problem is with the USB-Key.

WINXP-SP2 refuses to install the required driver.

I have searched the Forum for a solution to this problem.
Looks like I'm not the only one facing this problem.

The only solution so far appears to be a reinstall of XP from scratch.

    Guess what:
I'm certainly NOT going to wipe the harddisk of my development PC,
it would take days to bring it back to where it is now!

Does anyone have any further hints on how to get the driver installed?

    regards

    Ralph

I've been using my key for a year or so. Lately, it's intermittant, and getting worse. Yesterday it took three minutes of plugging it in, getting a "device not recognized" error, unplugging it, plugging it in...

I'm one of the few who voted for s/w user registration, rather than a key. This is one of the reasons why. Keys are fine as long as they work, and you know where they are.

I have tried it on three different PCs, on two of them the driver doesn't install.

Since it does work on the third PC (newly installed native xp) I guess the dongle itself is ok, but the driver (or it's .INF file) is crap.

This is something CROWNHILL should take really serious and that needs to be investigated.

    regards

    well,
the fact that it installs on "most" PCs, and on "some" it doesn't
does not really solve my (and CRWONHILL's) problem,
and one can not really expect the user
to reinstall the OS (and all apps)
just to get that driver working.

    Again,
this should be taken really serious,
because the use of that cheap dongle makes
(on the background of potential install problems)
    the entire product look cheap
(and I'm sure CROWNHILL does not really want that).

    Hints like
    "reinstall your PC"
    do not really help!

    regards

    HI cgriffin,

I had that same problem a few months ago and finally the dongle quit working.I got the same error message.I had to send it back to crownhill for a replacement. If I was a serious developer then that would have cost me a lot of money.
