Yes, I had a look at the datasheet Bob. Despite what it says, my modules will not decode the ZDA or the GLL sentences. GGA, GSA, GSV , RMC and VTG are all OK.

I always use the cheapest that I can find on EBay, never had a problem. I wonder if you have a faulty display. I assume that altering the contrast pot has no effect.

The BME280 should do SPI although I haven't tried it myself. Some boards only bring out the I2C connections, others do both. I might buy one that offers SPI to play with.
