    A simple light dimmer has a resistor and a diac in series with M2 and Gate for triggering... use an opto with triac output to short g and m1 to remove gate drive to turn the main triac off.

    Yes the unused pins d0-d3 on the display need to be tied high, I had them grounded which is a standard thing to do to unused inputs. So it depends on the LCD but if I ground them It does not work. ...
