Question PIC 18F14K22 support

We started using the new PIC18F14K22 devices but it seems that the Proton basic compiler v3.2.5.5 we are using does not support it. Do you know when support will be added for this?

Support for this device is in the pre-release of the compiler.

Goto the beta section of the forum for details on how to download and install it.

The 14K22 is a neat chip,, but beware!! there are some serious silicon issues if using the MSSP module.

In SPI mode 0,0 it basically doesn't receive, even the suggested work around didn't work for me. Also the configuration tables in the datasheet are incorrect in places.

It does, however to its credit, have on board debug silicon that does not require a header if you can dedicate the 3 control lines, and run in the latest MPLAB 8.43.

Must have been designed by those responsible for the PicKit3.

I now do all my testing on a 44K20 and port, the silicon issues are much reduced on this part.

It would be good if we had a section in the new website for items such as this for all to refer to without having to go through the lousy search engine we now have.

Hi Roger,

Check the erata files for any problems on the MSSP.

If you don't find it mentioned there then refer the issue to MChip.

Usually if there is something wrong with a new pic it gets corrected quite soon. Why did you buy the first one

I always check if they are listed as 'In Production' and 'Mature Product'. Chances of these having a hickup are small.

Hi Fanie,

Mea Culpa, I'm afraid!.
I was reviewing the plethora of chips now available from MChip, as I needed 2SPI ports and the 14K22 was available from stockists. My first job now on reviewing a new chip is to look at the Errata, (doesn't help though when the manual is incorrect).

The 18F26J11 (just arrived) hopefully should solve the problem.

I've ordered samples of the enhanced mid-range 16F1827, looks good, but I will have to dust off my ICD2 again! Problem - not available yet from stockists.

Not all problems are resolved quickly by MChip. The 18F452/4520 had an inherent fault in the RX/Tx Eusart for years, (would arbitrarily drop data). Was eventually corrected, but MChip never officially recognised the fault.

BTW, talking mature, I found some 16C711 and 5 eprom development chips around the workshop the other day. 20 minutes to UV erase, so five gave me a 4 min erase/modify/blow/test cycle, no icd, no pickit2. Those were the (not so good) days, but everybody was in the same boat.

Cheers

roger

He he... sounds a bit like my wife.
She'd get home from shopping and there would be some stuff we do not use.
Why did you get those ?
It was on a sale at 25% off (and all the reasons follows...)
Yeah but we don't use that...
(they don't think like that )
and one can tell it didn't cross her mind when she bought it either
And this is where the trouble start

I never seemed to have figgered out just exactly where the threshold is where you overstep, but I do suspect it is a variable level.

At least she's popular with every one else because she's always giving stuff away

As for the pics I use I've been quite happy by selecting the nicer ones so far. Only the 18F2430 I've had a problem with. MChip engineers response was that the chip is too enhanced for my app The 18's couln't make speed so how would the suggested 16's do it

Have a look at the bigger 26k20 or 25k20 series pics. 64MHz int osc and such a marvel to work with. Cheaper than the other pics too and all the groceries stashed inside.

Unfortunately Mchip seem to cut and paste modules for their new chips, and all 'K' chips have the same SPI disease.

SPI has an inherent throughput limit, anf the 16F1827 enhanced mid range easily meets that (on paper).

H Roger,

While the 24/7 MChip support operating between Monday and Friday at times could have been a bit better, I must admit I haven't come across many errors in the data sheets. They are pretty awesome apart from being somewhat disorganized

Are you sure the serials have a problem - or is it maybe something misunderstood from our side ?
